Design | Japanese Farm House | Westchester County, NY | 1920’s

After living many years in Japan, the Owners, moving back to the United States, bought this 5-acre site with an existing cottage style house. The design was to convert this cottage into a Japanese Style Farm house, engaging the landscape and staying within the “footprint” of the building with the exception of the addition of “engawas” (Japanese, open porch) and an “hisashi”, canopy roof. Taking the existing structure, the design “translated” its interior and exterior features, opening up the interior of existing small rooms to offer large open space that “walks” out into the garden from almost every room.
