9 East 97th Street | Upper East Side, NYC | 1926
Masonry and wood frame structure with Roman buff brick and limestone facade
Formally named Hortense Court, 9 East 97th Street is a six-story Italianate apartment house with a two-story rusticated limestone base and bays. The building’s elegant central entry is framed by a portico supported on four granite columns and four limestone pilasters.
Kamen Tall Architects was hired to bring the building up to Local Law 11 Cycle 7 compliance. After a complete exterior survey, a scope of work was devised targeting all elevations. In addition to brick, limestone and granite repair, the south (street-facing) façade underwent a cleaning program to restore brilliance to the materials. Construction was completed in Summer 2015.
